The Family Elder Crisis Event:

Who needs Elder Care Plan services? Senior family members and their caregivers. Eventually, everyone.

Most families are unprepared to deal with the needs of aging parents. 76 percent of adults have never discussed senior issues within the family. 70 percent of adult children have never asked parents about their wishes. Nearly half have given no thought to caring for their aging parents. Action is deferred until there is a real need.

The Elephant In The Living Room:

Elephant In The Livingroom

Inevitably, there is that need – the family elder crisis event. It’s like an elephant has escaped from the hall closet and is standing in the living room. It cannot be ignored. It will not be delayed.

The time of the year that experiences the highest number of family senior crisis events is Thanksgiving. The family gathers for the holiday. Then, they discover that something is not right with Granny or Gramps.

No one is immune. It can happen anytime to anyone with aging parents. It often begins with a call from or about an older parent in distress circumstances, or worse. Afterwards, the lives of the older parent and of the primary caregiver will be radically changed. In an effort to provide elder care and comfort to parents, caregivers experience disruptions that reduce the quality of their lives and often disrupt their careers.

Who Are The Caregivers?

Caregiving

Typically, caregivers are 40 years old or more. They are 56 percent women and 44 percent men. At any one time, they average about 11 percent of total population, up to 23 percent of any cross-section adult group and about 13 percent of the workforce. Caregivers are a significant, but not obvious, part of our society.
